Research Program

Ecosystem services from cropping systems, including
- Fluxes of greenhouse gases (e.g., CH4, N2O, and CO2) and other trace gases (e.g., NH3)
- Improvement of soil health, including soil carbon sequestration, soil aggregation, and biodiversity
- Mitigation of nutrient leaching (NO3-, PO43-)

Dynamics of soil C and N and other nutrients (e.g., iron and phosphorus) among different soil aggregates and fractions.

Chemometric methods for FTIR spectroscopy-based gas and soil analyses

Current Research Topics & Future Work

My current research focuses on the mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (i.e., CH4 and N2O from rice paddy soils and N2O from upland crop systems) and soil carbon sequestrations, including carbon protection mechanisms (i.e., physical protection via soil aggregation and chemical protection via Fe/Al co-precipitation and clay adsorption) from the agricultural cropping systems. Our group is also developing a soil carbon monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) protocol and a carbon credit project based on nature-based solutions, such as carbon farming via regenerative agriculture. For future research, we will explore more ecosystem services (ESs), such as soil health, biodiversity, nutrient leaching, etc., from the agroecosystem and improve these ESs for not only achieving the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) but agricultural sustainability.
